ABOUT LEÓN

This summer program is offered in an ideal setting, the city of León, a historical city in Northwestern Spain on the Road to Santiago de Compostela, traveled since the Middle Ages by thousands of pilgrims every year. This important crossroads is also a prosperous, fast-developing, modern provincial capital that has proudly preserved all the charms of a very important and rich historical past.

Today, with a population of 150,000, the city of León is a manageable, attractive, safe, and hospitable city for visitors. It has something for everyone. Cultural events are ongoing throughout the year. They include popular fiestas, recitals, theatre, concerts, cinema, art exhibitions, sport competitions and a thriving nightlife. There is also a relaxed atmosphere in the numerous cafés and restaurants around  the city, where you can enjoy the friendliness of its people.

ABOUT MADRID

It is hard to resist the exuberance, warmth and charm of Madrid. A modern, bustling, and lively city, the Spanish capital lies at the heart of the Iberian Peninsula.
Madrid is a city of outstanding art galleries, captivating back streets, beautiful parks, atmospheric cafés and lively nightlife. The old and modern coexist with sixteenth century
winding mazes of streets and harmonic plazas, eighteenth century elegant civic buildings and parks and boulevards with cutting edge contemporary architecture.
Madrid is home to
the renowned Museo del Prado - featuring some of the best Spanish, Flemish and Italian art of the 15th to 19th centuries with Goya, Velazquez and El Greco well represented - the Museo de la Escultura Abstracta for a good collection of abstracts by Miro and Chillida, and the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia for an excellent collection of 20th century art which includes Picasso’s Guernica.

SIGHTSEEING

Besides the Madrid three-day visit, this summer program includes visits in León to the most important historical monuments and field trips around the region. On the third weekend, there is an optional trip to Santiago de Compostela organized by the University of León, which is not covered by the Program. Participants will also have the opportunity to travel on their own to other parts of Spain.

TRANSFERRING CREDIT

Courses in the program are taught by the University of León’s faculty members. The professors have years of experience and are experts in the field of teaching Spanish as a Second Language and cultural studies. Credits earned in these courses will be automatically accepted at Molloy and St. Joseph’s, and will count towards student’s general education or major requirements. Students from other colleges should check with an appropriate academic advisor to determine which credits are transferable to their own academic institutions.
